"Alternatives to Ritalin"The above titled article appeared on December 8, 1997 in the North County Times (San Diego, California area) and featured a picture and comments of a Cardiff, California D.C. named David Melendez. The subtitle to the article was "Parents and professionals search for ADD/ADHD treatments that go beyond drug therapy." Melendez was quoted as follows: "We help heal without drugs. Chiropractic is not a treatment for ADHD. It's a restoration of health through adjustments. With true ADHD, amino acid supplements allow building blocks to maximize neurotransmitters. We've found multiple subluxations with people with ADHD. All the ones I've checked have had spinal problems." A patient of Melendez's, Brett Healy, was featured in a sidebar, "Healy tried everything from elimination diets to exercises to neurological testing to chiropractic care. Some things worked for Brett; others did not. But her (Brett's mom) current mix of behavior modification, good nutrition, amino acid supplements and chiropractic care is producing results, she said." A La Jolla psychiatrist was quoted as saying, "All learning is generated by motor systems. The original place ADD takes place is in the motor system. If corrected, there is less reliance on medication." Sounds like psychiatrist meets chiropractor in La Jolla!!! |
