REMOVING TONSILS DOESN'T HELP EAR INFECTIONS

A report in the September 8, 1999 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association finds that removing children's tonsils and adenoids does not help recurrent ear infections.

Two 14-year clinical studies conducted by the researchers found that removing the adenoids alone or the tonsils and adenoids together had any long-lasting effect. In fact, they concluded that due to the complication rate from the two surgeries, "neither operation ordinarily should be considered as an initial intervention in such children."

14.5% of the children who had both tonsils and adenoids removed experienced surgical complications as compared with 4.8% of the children who only had their adenoids removed.

So what's a parent to do about recurrent ear infections? The October, 1997 issue of the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics reports that a study involving 332 children with Otitis Media (ear infections) found that not only did the children under chiropractic care recover faster, they had fewer instances of the ear infections happening again later on.
