The wellness care movement began many centuries ago. Early in this century, the philosophy of chiropractic emerged. The philosophy of wellness as espoused by D.D. Palmer, the father of chiropractic, in 1895 is echoed today by Deepak Chopra and Andrew Weil and many other popular authors.
The chiropractic profession is glad the time for our philosophy has finally come!
This is an anonymous poem, read by John Denver at many of his concerts. It embodies the essence of the philosophical difference between the acute crisis mentality of the current medical system and direction the chiropractic profession and others have been leading the country in true health care reform. Yes, build up the fence and let us dispense with this ambulance down in the valley!
We will always need crisis care for mishaps and other reasons, but it shouldn't be the main focus of a health care system. Health is defined by Dorland's Medical Dictionary and the World Health Organization as:
A state of optimal physical, mental and social well-being not just the absence of disease and infirmity.
Optimal health on all levels is developed as the result of healthy lifestyle habits. Disease is developed in the body as the result of trying to unsuccessfully adapt to unhealthy lifestyle habits. Poor lifestyle habits and sub-optimal body function coupled with the notion that one can wait for disease to manifest and then treat it, leads to the current dominance of disease in our culture.
Which emphasis do you follow in your life? Crisis care only or healthy lifestyle habits coupled with crisis care when needed. Do you acknowledge the body’s inborn ability to heal itself? Do you have an understanding that our nervous system transmits the life-force to all our body tissues? If so, then you understand the importance of regular chiropractic care to remove the interference so the body has the best chance to adapt to the environment. Better adaptation coupled with a healthy lifestyle gives you the best chance to express optimal physical, emotional and social well-being - thus creating a healthier world. That is the vision of chiropractic.
Continue or begin the process of the chiropractic wellness lifestyle. The mainstay of this lifestyle is getting regular chiropractic adjustments to reduce the devastating effects of spinal nerve injury on your body’s ability to adapt to your environment. Other aspects include adopting regular exercise, eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, drinking pure water and putting positive, uplifting thoughts into your mind daily. Remember to take time out for yourself to do something you enjoy. This is also part of the chiropractic wellness lifestyle.
Please share this article with friends and family and be proud to be at the leading edge in health care by being a chiropractic practice member and adopting a health supporting lifestyle for life.
