Vaccines Not Mandatory In Michigan

Despite letters to the contrary from school districts, day care centers and other institutions, immunizations are not mandatory.  In Michigan we have a statute (MCLA § 333.9215, entitled "exemptions"):  A child is exempt from this part if a parent, guardian or person in loco parentis of a child presents a written statement to the administrator of the child's school or operator of the group program to the effect that the requirements of this part cannot be met because of religious convictions or other objections to immunizations.  This stature allows you to sign a waiver to decline getting immunizations prior to enrolling in a day care or educational institution.

While Chiropractic Wellness Center does not oppose vaccines - we oppose mandatory vaccines. While the distinction may sound subtle, it points to the core of our concern - that all citizens should have the right to make their own health care choices.  Michigan is one of only 17 states which continues to support the right of parents and individuals to make their own vaccination choices, though that right is under constant attack.

Why do people choose not to use vaccinations?
Of the many reasons, perhaps the most fundamental is that we deserve the right to make our own health care decisions. Others include:

bulletConflicts with religious beliefs
bulletConcern about the lack of research on adverse reactions
bulletDesire to use alternative medicine
bulletConcern that doctors downplay the risks involved
bulletBeliefs that factors other than vaccines have reduced disease
bulletPersonal experience with adverse vaccine reactions
bulletAllergies to the compounds used to grow vaccines

Vaccine waiver forms are used in situations where proof of vaccination must be submitted. Vaccines that Michigan requires a waiver for are:

bulletDiphtheria
bulletTetanus
bulletPertussis
bulletPolio
bulletHepatitis B
bulletVaricella

bulletMeasles
bulletMumps
bulletRubella
bulletHaemophilus influenzae type b (pre-school child care programs only)

These mandates apply to:

bulletChildren attending licensed daycare (any group of 6 or more, as defined in Michigan)
bulletChildren attending public or private school
bulletMany summer camps
bulletSome colleges and universities

If you live in Michigan, you may use one of the following waiver forms:

Feel free to adapt it to meet your needs; for example, you may want to write in “Hepatitis B” as an exempt vaccine.
