Local Chiropractor Awarded Fellowship

Dr. Karl R.O.S. Johnson, Shelby Township chiropractor and clinical nutritionist, recently was named a Fellow of the Institute for Human Individuality’s (IfHI) by Peter D’Adamo, N.D., its Academic Dean.  To achieve this, Dr. Johnson had to attend training sessions and then take a certification exam on which he achieved a cum laude rating, the highest possible.

IfHI is a 501:3 foundation whose prime goal is to foster research in the expanding area of human nutrigenomics, the science that seeks to provide a molecular understanding for how common dietary chemicals affect health by altering the expression or structure of an individual’s genetic makeup.

Dr. Peter D’Adamo, author of Eat Right for Your Type, Cook Right for Your Type, Live Right for Your Type, and the Eat Right for Your Type Complete Blood Type Encyclopedia, guides the IfHI in this fast-developing field of scientific inquiry.

The five basic tenets of nutrigenomics are:

·        Improper diets are risk factors for disease.

·        Dietary chemicals alter gene expression and/or change genome structure.

·        The degree to which diet influences the balance between healthy and disease states may depend on an individual’s genetic makeup.

·        Some diet-regulated genes (and their normal, common variants) are likely to plan a role in the onset, incidence, progression, and/or severity of chronic diseases.

·        “Intelligent nutrition” — that is, diets based upon genetics, nutritional requirements and status — prevents and mitigates chronic diseases.

Over the past 20 years, Dr. Peter D’Adamo expanded upon his father’s work on blood type and diet, and compiled clinical data on thousands of patients.  His books introduced the concept that different people need different diets.  Not everyone thrives on a high carbohydrate/low fat diet or a high protein/low carbohydrate diet as patients and physicians alike know.  Peter D’Adamo merged the scientific understanding of human biodiversity with nutrition and clinical medicine, giving patients and physicians a rationale and a blueprint for individualized dietary recommendations.

Dr. Johnson has used Dr. D’Adamo’s principles in his practice for several years, noting the success of those patients following specific blood type diets.  He therefore looks forward to his affiliation with the Institute and the increased ability to help his patients that this association will give him.  For additional information on blood type diets, contact Dr. Johnson at (586) 731-8840.
